Chronic, unresolved pain can be draining on physical, mental, and emotional reserves. It affects sleep duration and quality, cognition, mood, the ability to eat and exercise, the ability to work or connect with family and friends, and the ability to maintain self-care. Naturopathic medicine has a multipronged approach to addressing chronic pain that is highly individualized.

Recognizing Chronic Pain

It is common for chronic pain to vary in intensity, characteristic (aching, burning, shooting, cramping, etc), and duration, even throughout one’s day. It can also directly or indirectly cause associated symptoms. Chronic pain can involve but is not limited to:

  • Joint and muscle pain

  • Fatigue

  • Headaches

  • Abdominal pain

  • Back pain

  • Irritability/low mood

  • Sleep disturbances

  • Brain fog

  • Nausea

  • Lowered window of tolerance (decreased capacity to handle stresses previously manageable)

Understanding the Causes of Chronic Pain

Chronic pain can stem from various sources, including previous injuries, connective tissue disorders, inflammatory diseases, psychological stress, nervous system dysregulation and/or overstimulation, and lifestyle factors. Each case is unique and requires an individualized approach. Important to understand in our approach to ongoing care is what works (and what doesn’t work) in a given patient may change over time given the dynamic nature of these conditions. My practice focuses in helping folks with conditions like fibromyalgia, Ehlers-Danlos type III, myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), post-viral syndromes, and GI conditions. Chronic pain also often has a significant mental and emotional toll that needs recognition and care. Education surrounding the complexity of these chronic pain conditions is necessary, as this education can empower patients and provide a vital sense of self-compassion.

Assessing and Treating Chronic Pain

Comprehensive evaluation is key in assessing chronic pain. A naturopathic doctor will conduct thorough assessments, including a detailed health history, physical examination, and necessary lab tests to identify underlying issues. Treatment options may incorporate botanical medicines, physical therapies, pacing and other lifestyle modifications, nutritional support, nutraceuticals, acupuncture, and homeopathy. Focusing on both alleviating pain and addressing the root causes (when possible) ensures more effective management and relief. Ongoing monitoring and adjustments are made to optimize the treatment plan as needed.
